Supermarket Visit to Westend New World - Friday 22 Sept. 9amA big thank you to our wonderful parent helpers, Zara and Pateriki's mums who helped Room 10 to read the nutritional information on various food products at Westend New World. Also thank you to Jasmin from the Heart Foundation for organising this trip and for the $60 food voucher. Room 10 are planning a shared healthy lunch on Thursday.
Rotorua Intermediate School (RIS) OrientationOn Thursday 14 September Year 6 students who will be going to RIS in 2018 will be attending the Orientation morning. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend. Remember to enrol your child at RIS as soon as possible.
Food for Thought - with Jasmin from the Heart FoundationDuring weeks 8 and 9, Room 10 will be learning about food groups and food label information. On Wednesday 20 September at 10am - 11am we will be visiting Westend New World Supermarket to learn about fruits and vegetables, nutritional information on different food group products. We need some parent helpers to assist with this trip please.
Mathathon - Basic Facts fundraiserPlease help your child to collect sponsorship by asking whanau family members, work mates, friends and neighbours.
We realise that children will have differing opportunities for obtaining sponsorship and ask that each student does their best. The money raised from the Malfroy School MATHATHON will be put towards EOTC and curriculum resources which will benefit all our students. Every student who brings in at least $10 for the Mathathon will go into the spot prize draw. Thank you in anticipation of your support towards this fundraising, learning fun venture. Room 10 Masterchef quarter finalists Essence, Tyrell, Toko, Luis, Shevahn, Nelson, Jessica, Maia, Pateriki and Zara had to particpate in a Blind Taste Challenge to identify 15 different food samples on Friday. From these the top 4 semi finalists will have to learn a simple health and safety aspects of cooking worksheet. Congratulations to our semi finalists Essence who identified correctly 9 out of 15, Tyrell and Nelson who both scored 8 out of 15 and Jessica who scored 7 out of 15.

Science Roadshow visit at Westbrook SchoolOn Wednesday 30 August at 1pm, Mrs T took 20 senior school students from Rooms 10, 11, 12, 14 and 16 to visit the Fonterra Science Road Show at Westbrook School. Essence, Luis, Pateriki and Luis from Room 10 enjoyed the opportunity to particpate in 'hands on' science experiments. A big thank you to the parent helpers who helped with transport and supervision.

This term Room 10 and the other senior classes are participating in Malfroy Masterchef. We are learning about food, nutrition, cooking and how to prepare food safely.
Smoothies making, fruit and vegetable recognition challenge, pikelet making, spices and sauces (look and smell) challenge, bread making, yeast experiments, yoghurt and cheese making, blind taste testing, learn about honey and a cupcake bake off. SwimmingLearning about Childhood ObesityRoom 10 have researched the causes of Childhood Obesity and why its important to eat healthy food, sleep for at least 6 hours every night and exercise. Term 3
This term our focus will be Healthy Eating, Food and Nutrition, Master Chef Challenges and Cooking.
Malfroy Master Chef will involve exploring and adapting recipes, food safety, cooking measurements, designing and creating a cookbook, food photography, food pyramid, healthy drinks and snacks and lots more. We will be having swimming in week 3 at the Aquatic Centre. Bernie and Harold from Life Education will be teaching us about "What influences Our Food Choices". Jasmin from the Heart Foundation's Food for Thought Programme will teach us about Food Groups, Food Label reading and take us to Westend New World Supermarket for food and nutrition education. Week 10 and 11Using the Up, Up and Away Science Kit from the House of Science gave Room 10 the opportunity to explore Flight. They investigated how birds fly, predicted and tested how far paper planes can fly, explored flight terms and their meanings, investigated how to make balloon rockets to demonstrate thrust and experimented with aerofoils which demonstrated how aeroplane wings create lift.
Week 9This week started with a performance from Apirana Taylor from Wellington. Apriana is a talented poet, novelist, performer, storyteller, musician and painter. He entertained Malfroy School with his abilities to play traditional Maori instruments and other traditional instruments from his travels around the world. Apriana is a master of storytelling who uses the sounds from these instruments to captivate his audience.
After morning tea, Apirana held a writer's workshop for budding authors in year 5 and 6. Zara, Puhi, Tyrell and Motu had the privilege to participate in this workshop. They really enjoyed this opportunity to learn from Apirana. Room 10 received the Get NZ Writng parcel from Otaki School who we had sent our pack to. It was interesting reading about the difference between Malfroy School and Otaki School. They also included their 32 postcards which included an introduction from each student from Mrs Batley's class.Thank you Otaki School for taking part in this programme. Due to wet weather this week Athletics Day is postponed to next week and the Whanau Aternoon was cancelled. Room 10 had a busy week updating their own weebly pages. Please read their work and make a positive comment. Week 8The temporary Portocom classrooms were removed from Malfroy School. A large crane and lots of trucks lifted the buildings and moved them from our school to be relocated at another school in Auckland.
After 5 months of being away from Room 10, its great to be back. Room 10 is larger, cooler and closer to everything like the library and Astroturf. On Tuesday we welcomed twins girls, Zaakirah and Zakiyyah, who have come from Kaharoa School. The sisters are year 6 students whose family comes from Fiji. Room 10 spent the week finishing off writing 32 postcards and poster to sent to Otaki School. Room 10 and other Malfroy School classrooms have participated in Get NZ Writing 2017. Next week's notices: Remember to return Easter Raffle tickets - $2 per ticket, $10 for a book. Lots of cool prizes to be won. Tuesday 28/3 - Athletics Day all day weather permitting. Room 10's sport's colour is yellow. Wednesday 29/3 - Whanau Afternoon 4pm - 6pm. Friday 31/3 - Teacher Only Day - no school. Logan's birthday. Week 7This week was our last in the temporary Portocom classroom. On Wednesday and Thursday we moved to A block and into Room 10 near the Library and the covered Astroturf.
Friday 17 March - St Patrick's Day. Room 10 made baked potatoes with butter and sour cream, ate green grapes and made milk smoothies. The smoothie flavours were banana or chocolate with green food colouring. We invited Roman and Olivia who are from Paris, France to eat with Room 10. They are travelling the world visiting schools to promote connections between classroom using the internet. Olivia Mouchet's idea is for schools to globally share their cultural diversity, peachteachforpeace.org. Roman and Olivia visited Rotorua after being in India. Their next stop is to South America. Room 10 learned about some Irish culture including Irish Riverdance, Irish music, St Patrick, Shamrocks and the Potato Famine. Over the weekend Room 10 got new curtains to help block out some of the sun when we are working on our devices. The curtains are colourful and match the Malfroy School uniform. Week 6Last week ended with our trip to the Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition. A big THANK You to our two lovely parent helpers, Pateriki's and Zara's mums' who joined Room 10 on the trip. Both mums were very busy helping the class build a Cable bridge and a Beam bridge using real tools.
On Friday afternoon Motu enjoyed a great trip mountain biking with Mrs Lane and Mr Brell. On Sunday, Cohen ran 2 km and Mrs T walked 21.2 km at the Rotorua Off Road Half marathon and the Little Devils event in the Whakawerawera Forest. Cohen and Mrs T wore our medals all day on Monday. Motu celebrated his 10th birthday on Wednesday. On Thursday Room 10 enjoyed a tennis lesson with Justin the head tennis coach from the Rotorua Tennis Club. Justin was at Malfroy School during the week teaching every student at Malfroy School some tennis skills. Thank you Justin for your fun tennis lesson which was extremely well received by all who took part. Unfortunately due to the wet weather Top School was cancelled on Thursday night. On Friday many students in Room 10 took part in an on-line Science test trial which gave the student an opportunity to answer science questions. Room 10 said they enjoyed the test. Next week we are moving back to Room 10 near the library. Week 5Congratulations to our newly trained Dynamo leaders Toko, Nelson, Jessica and Cohen. Dynamo leader take lunchtime games to promote fun, cooperative games and healthy activities. The games the Dynamo leaders will run will be held on the field and in the school hall.
Thank you to all the Room 10 students who helped Room 14 students to log onto google classrooms and to upload their photo. Its an important part of Malfroy School to show kindness to others and help them to learn new things. This week Room 10 were exploring Leonardo da Vinci's inventions and famous paintings. On Friday 3 March Room 10 and Room 12 will be going to the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at 9.15am. At the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) Assembly on Tuesday, Ms McLaren encouraged everyone to strive to do your personal best. This is part of the Malfroy School Mission Statement which is: 'We strive to do our personal best to make a happy, caring school". Personal best (PB) in everything you do! Try to do your personal best when you are writing or reading or climbing or playing games or helping others. Room 10 are striving to do their personal best when publishing their work using their new chrome books. The year 6 students are teaching the year 5 students and myself how to use google classrooms. The students will be publishing their work soon on their student blogs pages. Well done to Motu who is selected to be part of the Top 5 club on Friday with Mr Brell. Motu and 4 other top year 6 students will going mountain biking. Every month Mr Brell and Ms McLaren will be looking for 5 more Top students. Week 4Our chrome books arrive - yipee!

Congratulations to our Room 10 Duathlon athletes. n the year 5 age group we had: Team 1: Abbie - 1st runner, Athena - cyclist and Zara - 2nd runner Team 2: Pateriki - 1st runner, Logan - cyclist and Puhi - 2nd runner Team 3: Kanav - 1st runner, Alex - cyclist and Harley - 2nd runner In the year 6 age group we had: Cohen competing as an individual who ran, cycled the ran again. This week is Malfroy School's first full week at school.
Fruits in School started with Room 10 enjoying plums, bananas, apricots and oranges. Yum! Mrs Sarah Francis started extra writing support for Bruce, Abbie, Shevahn and Essence. Raising achievement in writing is a school wide and a CoL Community of Learners focus with other schools. These schools are Glenholme, Seventh Day Adventist, Rotorua Intermediate, Rotorua Girls High and Rotorua Boys High. The senior school teachers have decided not to host Go Bananas this year. In its place each class will host a special senior assembly held every fortnight. Room 10 will be starting on Monday 20 February. Room 10 is also creating the newsletter page. Sadly the Duathlon was postponed until Tuesday 21 February. Room 10 has individual athletes participating in the running and the cycling. Others from Room 10 will be in a team of 3 with 2 runners and 1 cyclist. Room 10 have planned, filmed, photographed, edited and created a Responsibility power point for Monday's senior assembly. Under the guidance of our film directors Tyrell and Bruce, we have included humour and all the bloopers. Week 2Starting from week 1, Room 10 students are actively participating in leadership and responsible roles at Malfroy School.
Jessica, Puhi, and Abbie were all on school reception duties. Zara filled her reception duty on Tuesday this week. Road patrollers Cohen, Essence and Jessica helped students cross Malfroy Road safety. Puhi, Cohen and Pateriki delivered Milk In School to classrooms. Cohen ensured students received their library books. Sadly four students due to start in Room 10 this year have left Malfroy School. They have moved to Opotiki, Gisborne, Christchurch and across Rotorua to attend new schools. We wish them well. Welcome back to school this week, Kanav, Tyrell, Bruce, Harly and Shevahn. Mrs T (myself) welcomed 11 students to Room 10 on Day One. I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the class. It was great to see the smiley faces today at Malfroy School. Thanks to Jessica the first receptionist for the year. Today Room 10 were introduced to information about famous NZ Motor Racing heroes the late Bruce McLaren, late Denny Hulme, late Chris Amon and Kenny Smith who is still racing in his 70's. Mrs T went to the Historic GP motor racing at Taupo over the weekend. |
